Leela (from Sanskrit लील, meaning “play” or “divine play”) is a concept central to Hindu philosophy and metaphysics. The game is rooted back hundreds of years. There is no single accepted version of its history: one account suggests it was sacred knowledge held by Brahmins and used to follow a spiritual path and understand the laws of existence, while other sources indicate that the terms and concepts embedded in the Leela board date back over two thousand years!

The contemporary Indian version of Leela was first described by Indian tradition scholar and author Harish Johari in 1974 in his book “Leela: The Game of Self-Discovery.” The oldest surviving version of the game is Jain, with the board dating back to the 18th century, discovered in Rajasthan and now housed in the National Museum in New Delhi. Leela is considered the progenitor of many modern transformational games (such as “The Code of Kryon,” “Leela Chakra,” etc.) and the famous English children’s game “Snakes and Ladders.”

However, in its original form as presented by Harish Johari, Leela is primarily a spiritual practice where the game serves as a tool to solidify one’s path and offer the chance to adjust what is currently happening in life, thereby returning to the purpose for which one originally came into this world.

In 1952, Jung published a work centered around the idea of a spiritual and informational field. This field contains ideas, thoughts, and knowledge of the past, present, and future. It exists outside of time and space but is connected to the material world through the principle of synchronicity and through human psyche. This inseparable link between thought and matter allows people to influence their own lives and external circumstances.

Leela vividly demonstrates your ability to manage your life. By guiding you to a specific square or repeatedly bringing you back to it, the game will only let you leave once you have fully understood and adjusted your attitude towards a particular situation. As you change your thoughts, feelings, and actions, progress in the game occurs immediately, and its completion marking the final point of your inner transformation. All that remains is to apply this experience to your life and continue on your path towards awareness, happiness, and harmony between the external and internal worlds.

To grasp the purpose of the game, it's essential to understand its core principles:

• The game board consists of 72 squares , each representing a particular state or experience that we all encounter in life.
• The game begins and ends at square 68,known as "Cosmic Consciousness." This square symbolizes the subtle realm where the soul exists and makes the decision to incarnate in a human body and come to Earth to gain experience.
• The player states a question, query, or intention. Rolling a six on the dice confirms the relevance and timeliness of the query, allowing the player to enter the game - this marks the player's "birth."
• As the player moves across the board, he or she explores the concepts and ideas embedded in each square, introspecting, listening to the sensations and feelings, and records his or her thoughts. The facilitator (game master) assists the player by asking insightful questions and providing meaningful interpretations and examples.
• Each roll of the dice guides the player to the squares that hold messages crucial for his or her current state, helping to see and acknowledge what the player needs to at that moment.
• Through this journey, internal transformations occur, bringing the player back to the final square - "Cosmic Consciousness" (68). This state is the ultimate goal of the game, representing a return to a state of unity and alignment with oneself.

The end of the game signifies the resolution of the player’s query and achieving a state of connectedness with oneself - an alignment sought through various spiritual practices. It is the state of living in harmony with one's spirit and self.
